- Tannic Acid: Reacts with rust to form a blue-black ferric tannate compound, which is more stable and less likely to continue oxidizing.
- Phosphoric Acid: Converts rust into iron phosphate, a black, inert compound that provides a good surface for painting.
- Organic Polymers: These bind with the converted rust, forming a protective layer that can be painted over.
