What Is a Rust Converter?
A rust converter is a chemical solution designed to treat rusted (iron oxide) surfaces by converting the rust into a stable, non-corrosive compound. Instead of removing the rust, it reacts with it—usually using tannic acid and an organic polymer—to form a black, protective layer (often ferric tannate) that can be painted over.
- How to Use a Rust Converter
1. Surface Preparation: Remove any loose or flaky rust with a wire brush or sandpaper. Clean the surface to remove dirt, grease, and oil.
2. Application: Shake the rust converter well before use. Apply a generous, even coat with a brush, roller, or spray. Ensure full coverage of the rusted area.
3. Drying Time: Allow the rust converter to dry completely. This typically takes 24-48 hours, depending on the product and environmental conditions.
4. Inspection: After drying, inspect the surface. The rust should have turned into a stable, black or dark-colored compound.
