Metal Blackening Process
- The metal blackening process, also known as black oxide coating, is a finishing technique used to provide a thin, corrosion-resistant layer on metal surfaces. This process enhances the appearance of the metal and provides a mild form of protection without altering the dimensions of the part. It’s commonly used on steel and stainless steel but can also be applied to other metals like copper and brass.
1. Cleaning/Surface Preparation
- Objective: Remove oil, grease, dirt, and rust to ensure proper adhesion of the blackening solution.
- Method: Typically done with a degreaser, alkaline cleaner, or acid cleaner, depending on the condition of the metal. The metal may also undergo pickling in a mild acid solution to remove rust and scale.
