Cleaning & Degreasing – The metal is cleaned with an alkaline cleaner or solvent to remove oil, grease, and contaminants. 2. Hot Black Oxide Bath – The metal is immersed in a heated solution (285–300°F) containing sodium hydroxide, nitrites, and nitrates. This reaction forms magnetite (Fe₃O₄), a black oxide layer. 4.
