Metal blackening chemicals are used to create a black or dark protective conversion coating on metal surfaces. The coating is formed by a chemical reaction with the metal itself, rather than by applying paint.
* Purpose of Blackening
- Improves appearance (uniform black finish)
- Reduces light reflection and glare
- Provides mild corrosion resistance
- Enhances wear resistance when combined with oil or wax
- Serves as a base for protective oils and sealers.
* Types of Metal Blackening Processes :-
1. Cold Blackening
Performed at room temperature.
Commonly used for mild steel, iron, and some alloys.
Faster and simpler than hot blackening.
Usually followed by a sealer, oil, or rust preventive treatment..
2. Hot Black Oxide
Typically operates around 135–150°C.
Produces a more durable black oxide coating.
Widely used for engineering and automotive components.
* Applications
-Nuts, bolts, and fasteners
-Hand tools
-Machine parts
-Firearms components
-Metal furniture hardware
-Automotive parts
-Decorative steel products.
